A Clio implementation begins with digitizing and electronically storing photographs, to create permanent archives. These photos are stored as both high resolution images as well as low-res thumbnails. Once digitized, Clio software enables the institution to post thumbnails of the photos on its website in a community networking program. Visitors to the website can post messages and start conversations online about various photos and experiences. Clio transforms the institution's website into an interactive community.

Most importantly, Clio is cost effective: generally there is no investment required of the institution. The host institution can allow visitors to the site to license and order high quality reprints of photos they like. The entire order process is managed by Wellspring, from credit card processing, to printing, to shipment. Revenue is then shared between the host institution and Wellspring, turning Clio into a revenue generating enterprise.
